Running is one of the easiest and best forms of exercise out there. Anyone can do it anywhere they like. You can even run on the spot while watching TV, listening to music or having an engaging conversation. So why are so many people adverse to running as a form of exercise to help them lose weight?
The answer is simple, most of us don’t know how to prepare for this type of activity. Exercising requires a series of steps that will make your experience easier, safer and more effective. Here is the list of top 10 things you should know about running, before you begin.
Top 10 Things To Know About Running
1) If you plan to lose weight by running plan to run minimum 20-30 minutes, at least three times a week. Remember, even though running is good, it is not the only answer to your weight loss problem. Getting into the rhythm and running at regular intervals builds up your muscle strength and lets your body adjust to higher loads and longer distances later on in your exercise period
2) Prepare yourself first. Stretch before you run. Almost all people who begin to run forget to stretch before they start. Stretching is important. Very important. Your muscles need to be lose and warmed up so that you don’t damage them when you run. Limbering up your muscles (stretching) also helps you run for longer distances, faster, and expand (read burn calories) more energy. This almost always results in more weight loss. Bonus, you won’t feel as tired half way through you running routine.
3) Just like the previous tip, Stretching after you finish, helps keeping your muscles toned up and reduces recovery time, so that you can don’t get those aches the next day after a hard work out. But remember, stretching after you stopped running can actually damage you muscles, so this leads to my next tip.
4) Ensure that you let your body Cool down after a run by slowing down the pace from running to jogging to walking, about 10 to 15 min cool down should always follow a good 20-30 minute run. Increase cool down period as you increase you running time. After you cool down, do some light stretches.
5) Probably as important as Stretching is the need to have Proper running shoes. Sure anyone can run in their dress shoes, but I assure you that even Donovan Bailey would not be able to run far in his dress shoes. Running shoes make all the difference, they make your feet comfortable, let your run longer and faster. But don’t go crazy and spend $500 on a pair. For starters, you will only need probably a $60-$100. As you begin to run more, then you can go ahead a buy those top of the line ones.
